Welcome to this course on Functional Roles in Rugby Union. In this course, we will cover the position of Loosehead Prop. The loose head prop is one of rugby union’s most physically demanding and technically complex positions, serving as the cornerstone of the front row and a vital cog in the team’s forward pack. Wearing jersey number 1, the loose head prop anchors the left side of the scrum’s front row, where their primary responsibility is to provide a stable platform for their hooker while engaging in an intense battle for dominance against the opposing tight head prop.

• Module 1 – Scrummaging: In this module, we will delve deeper into the skills of scrummaging, unpacking the tips, tricks, and techniques used during scrummaging time to dominate the opposition.
• Module 2 – Lineout: In this module, we will go into the role of the loose-head Prop at the lineout, as well as some special moves, and some training drills for you to consider.
• Module 3 – Open Play: In this module, we will go into the role of the loose-head Prop in open play rugby and will challenge the traditional thinking behind the role of how to use the size, power, and strength of the front row in open play rugby.
• Module 4 – The Dark Arts: Module 4 of this course, which will cover the dark arts of the front row, where we look at some tips, tricks, subtle ways to cheat, and general shenanigans used to disrupt and unnerve the faint of heart.
• Module 5 – Conditioning: Module 5 of this course, which will cover the conditioning a Loose-head Prop needs in the modern game of rugby union
• Module 6 – Nutrition: In this module, you will learn about the calorific needs of the front row player and gain some information on what you can do to fuel your body for the specialist position of loose-head Prop.
